My favorite free audio player is Quintessential Player, and it has been so for years. I liked it because it’s simple and reliable, but now I felt that it was time for a change. I decided to test Songbird, and the main reason that pushed me to it was the fact that it’s an open source program. I feel that open source software have a better chance of developing into outstanding programs because of the commnunity support.
Tha first thing that I liked about Songbird is the variety of add-ons that you can install. I guess that Firefox add-ons addicts will be very happy with Songbird. While browsing through the various add-ons I had the same feeling that I had years ago when I first installed Firefox. First things first, I installed a lyrics add-on

I have to say that I was impressed right from the first song. I have the lyrics thanks to the add-on, I have the artist bio, discography, reviews, news, photos, even videos from YouTube and other sources. Hmmm, this could turn to be quite addictive.

I admit, I was a little bit skeptical about this one, mainly because of the 800 KB setup file? What can you pack into 800 kb? Well, it seems that I’ve been as wrong as I could be. I tested EvilLyrics with the best free audio player, Quintessential Player, and it worked like a charm. I just played my favorite song and EvilLyrics instantly grabbed the lyrics and showed them, even in karaoke mode!
EvilLyrics can work just fine with all the important audio players: Winamp, Windows Media Player, iTunes, MusicMatch, Foobar, MediaMonkey, Real Player, QCD, AlbumPlayer, Y!Music, XMPlay. And the coolest thing is that you can record your ugly voice in karaoke mode!
I’ve tried lots of media players, from BsPlayer to VLC and Windows Media Player. All of these have nice features but they have also annoying flaws. GOM Media Player has been a revelation for me: I’m still trying to find a media file format that this freeware can’t play! It even plays .ts files!
GOM Media Player has reached version 2.1.9.3753. If you have an older version just open the player and hit the F1 key, you’ll be downloading the latest version in no time. Some of the players I’ve used don’t offer the possibility to tweak everything you’d want. GOM Player lets you tweak your heart out: video adjustments, audio, subtitles. The list of nice features in this freeware is impressive:
- It includes many codecs (XviD, DivX, FLV1, AC3, OGG, MP4, H263 and more) so you won’t need to install separate codecs for most videos. For those videos that require a separate codec, GOM Player will find one and direct you to a place where you can download open source version of the codec. That way, you won’t get stuck with unnecessary codecs on your system.

Did you ever think about starting your own music blog, a music page on the net? Do you have a playful, refined taste in music that you want to share with the world? If so, then check out Like.fm, a free web service that makes starting and your own music page a breeze.
Your Like.fm page, if you are wondering, consists of a curated page of songs displayed as thumbnails, which you can share with friends, and which can be cross-posted to Facebook and Twitter. Other in the community can browse or follow your page, and they can like or reblog individual tracks. And if you find other kindred souls whose music taste you like, you can follow them as well to discover great new music.
Want to see it in action? check out my page that I just started. How it works: Like.fm makes things easy for itself: you can search for tracks you want to post and chances are others have posted them already, in which case you can reblog them to add to your page. If not, it will either help you find the song on YouTube or ask for a SoundCloud or other URL. Next you can tag it, add your own caption if you like, etc.
You can create ‘stacks’ out of songs, which is to say put playlists together. You could also ‘star’ songs that you would like to filter out, etc. Finding other people: search for a song and you will see a list of people who blogged/reblogged it, and you can click on their links and explorer their pages. Wish list: much could be made better with Like.fm
A better way to find people to follow: why not add a ‘community’ tab with users suggested for you, having been somehow ‘matched’ with the songs that you blogged. Or maybe a visual representation of connections. Honestly, finding people to follow at the time of this writing is strangely difficult.
A way to see everyone’s captions on a track: at once, with links, since they have that information anyway. Or perhaps to consolidate all comments that the song got, although it doesn’t seem that there are many comments anyway.
The ability to mouse over a song and jump to a page that lists other users who also blogged it.
Better connections to the rest of the site from your page: staring at your page, it is easy to not even know that there are links by genre that can be browsed, or to browse the ‘top users’ page.
Some info on the songs: a release date or year would be nice, if it’s possible to somehow find that.
The verdict: while It seems that with every passing day there is a new music sharing service or two or three coming out, what I like about Like.fm is that the model – having your own personal page – tends to promote user ‘ownership’ of the project, and allows you to access and share your page from anywhere, without apps and premium plans, etc.
I also like the fact that it gives you your owl URL (like.fm/username), and that it can automatically cross post on Facebook ad Twitter. Although they got a lot right, the site does seem like it needs a lot of work and optimization; here’s hoping that it will continue to get better.

We take thumbnails for images and video files for granted in Windows Explorer. Unless, of course, we do not have them. If you have media files that display icons instead of a thumbnail preview, then you probably feel mildly annoyed to say the least. Rest assured: Media Preview is a free, small utility that will make Windows display thumbnails for every conceivable video format. What’s better, it will do so at the click of a button, without fuss or complications.
This subject is dear to my heart, because I had previously written a how-to article on how to add thumbnail previews to MKV and other video formats in Windows. The article used all free software, of course, but was involved many steps and was sufficiently involved to warrant my writing a step-by-step guide on how to do it.
Not so with Media Preview, where all you need to do is run the program, check the video formats that you would like to have thumbnails for (see screenshot below), and apply. NOTE: if you lose the thumbnail preview functionality for video formats that were previously there but no longer work after applying Media Preview, go back and check them again.
Note that you will need to either (a) browse and open folders that contain the videos that need thumbnails generated to do so, or go to the ‘testing’ tab in the config panel pictured above, and drag and drop folders to generate thumbnails en-masse. Check the ‘recursive’ box if you want recursive folder processing. The verdict: a simple, beautiful program. If you want media file previews and you don’t have them, Media Preview is the easiest way to do it.
I would have liked for this program NOT to cause video formats that are unchecked to lose their previous thumbnail functionality after applying it, and forcing me to use it to process formats that previously were displaying thumbnails just fine thank you very much. Hopefully they will fix this in a future version.
I’m still holding out for a program that will let me change the thumbnail for individual files, by moving the snapshot time backwards or forwards. If anyone knows of a software that can do this please let me know.
