The interesting thing is that once you applied several effects on your picture you can easily remove those effects one by one, without removing the other applied effects. You can also add text boxes in your picture easily. PhotoPad supports around a dozen picture formats, the most popular ones like bitmap, jpeg, png or even targa files (tga) or Photoshop documents (psd).
If you want a tool that can make basic corrections to your pictures without getting too complicated PhotoPad might be a solution. There are a few basic effects and corrections available, enough to suit the basic needs of a not very demanding user. Version Tested

Overview XNView is a freeware program that can be used as an image viewer or as a graphic file converter. It can open around 400 graphic file types. Review
My favorite image viewer right now is Google’s Picasa 3 and I guess the best way to test XNView is to compare it with Picasa. Fot this purpose I chose a monster JPG file, 42 megs in size with a resolution of 13616 per 9888 pixels, a picture of my country’s map, Romania. Both programs successfully opened the file in around 10 to 15 seconds, so there were no major differences there. There was a huge difference in the memory footprint though. Picasa 3 took around 50 megs of memory in the picture editing mode while XNView was way over that figure, almost 800 MB! That’s quite a lot by any standard…
Otherwise XNView is a solid free image viewer that can handle more than 400 file formats for import and around 50 for export. It also offers a few interesting picture editing options like adding a watermark or several effects and filters.
It also offers batch convert and batch rename features and the possibility to create contact sheets easily. Overall it has a few features that Picasa 3 doesn’t have but that is not a good enough reason to replace Picasa with XNView.

Review PicPick was recommended to me by Bear Bottoms, and I think I’ll thank him again for that. But let me tell you about the program first and then you’ll decide what I should do.
At a first look I was a little bit puzzled. I said to myself: “OK, is it a screenshot capture program, an image editor, a color picker, what is it?”

I opened the image posted above for editing in PicPick after I captured it with the program that I was using for that purpose, ScreenshotCaptor. PicPick offers basic editing facilities, but they are more than enough if you ask me.

The program also features a pixel ruler, a color picker, a very good screenshot capture module with scrolling support and multi screen support. There is another interesting feature called whiteboard, in which you can draw over your windows before you make the screen capture, and the output image will be processed with the lines you added on top of the window. Cool stuff.

Although it won’t replace The Gimp as my favorite image editor PicPick will definitely be my favorite screenshot capture program for a long time to come.
Overview Pivot is a highly entertaining freeware program that allows you to build your own stick figure animations and save them as .gif files. It might be a useful program too.

As you might have seen I have a new theme for my website now after moving it to paid hosting. Every day I’m trying to improve the desing and having a color picker is a great help. That’s how I found Color Cop and I can say I’m very happy that I came across this tiny freeware program.

It’s very simple: you have an eyedropper and a magnifier, you can pick and identify colors and the program will provide the respective color code. It supports HTML Hex, Delphi Hex, PowerBuilder, Visual Basic Hex, and Visual C++ Hex. You can either install it or use it as standalone.

The image viewer that I chose to use was IrfanView, a legendary freeware program. But things are changing and IrfanViewdoesn’t seem to keep up with the pace. Many of you suggested that I should try Picasa 3. So I decided to give it a go.

And I must say I was quite impressed. The feature list is quite long, as the program offers many awesome possibilities. The main thing is that, as an image viewer, Picasa is great. The preview function is very good, lightweight and fast. If you go further and you want to retouch your images Picasa offers quite a few possibilities, enough for doing some quick edits to your photos.
As for the rest of the features, they are quite impressive: you can sync your files to your Picasa Web Album, create and edit movies, make screen captures.

Yesterday I received a .CDR file that I needed to import into a video editing application. But the program didn’t support .CDR files (as far as I know .CDR is a Corel Draw proprietary format). So I needed to convert the file into something else, like .jpg, .png, .bmp or even .tga After hours of searching I found IrfanView, a freeware program that I used before as a photo viewer, and that promises to solve my problem. Let’s see if it does.
Well, first of all, let’s see if it even opens the damn .CDR file.
It did open it, and now just go to “File > Save as” and try to save it as a useful format.
You can choose from various formats, I chose .jpg and the job was done. A good thing is that you can even tweak the settings for your future .jpg file.
Although I do professional video editing from time to time to earn some extra cash I never was too much into graphics and photo editing. I’ve tried Adobe Photoshop and I found it to be too f..ing expensive and too much of a resource eater. Today I decided to try GIMP, or if you want to call it the long way, “The GNU Image Manipulation Program”. It’s free as the air and might be enough for my photo editing needs. Let’s try it.
I’ve made a quick photo of one of my speakers and opened it with GIMP. Let’s see what I can do with it in a couple of minutes.
First of all, let’s cut out the cigarettes and all that stuff, let’s leave only the speaker. Cropping the image works like a breeze, it takes only a few seconds. Now I’ll add some black brush strokes on the edges.
Okay, now let’s blur out the “Philips” logo, they didn’t pay for the advertising
Well, that might not be professional graphics, but it took me only two minutes to play around with my photo and get this output. I found the interface very intuitive and logical, and the whole program seems user friendly. Of course, this open source program has many more features. Let’s try to make a list: Photo Enhancement – Numerous digital photo imperfections can be easily compensated for using GIMP. Fix perspective distortion caused by lens tilt simply choosing the corrective mode in the transform tools. Eliminate lens’ barrel distortion and vignetting with a powerful filter but a simple interface. Digital Retouching – GIMP is ideal for advanced photo retouching techniques. Get rid of unneeded details using the clone tool, or touch up minor details easily with the new healing tool. With the perspective clone tool, it’s not difficult to clone objects with perspective in mind just as easily as with the orthogonal clone.
