Review
UNetbootin is a small freeware utility that allows you to create bootable USB drives for a wide range of Linux distributions. I decided to install and test Linux Mint on my PC and I didn’t want to create a bootable CD, it’s much easier and comfortable to use and USB disk for that purpose. Although UNetbootin supports dozens of Linux distributions and versions it still does not support the latest version of Linux Mint. That was not a big problem though, I downloaded the .iso file and loaded it into the program easily.

The USB disk that I inserted was recognized automatically by the program, so everything was ready to go.

It took less than five minutes to create the bootable USB disk and it was extremely easy, I just had to make a few clicks and wait.

You can also use this freeware program to run several system utilities from an USB disk, partition managers or system recovery tools.

Overview
WinCDEmu is an open source CD/DVD emulator that is extremely easy to use: you just have to double-click the image file in Windows Explorer and it will be mounted in a virtual drive!
Review
The freeware CD/DVD burner that I’ve been using for almost a year now, StarBurn, has also a module called StarPort in which you can create virtual drives and mount disc images into them. But when I found the open source program called WinCDEmu that promised to mount images with a single click I said to myself: “I have to try this one!”. Now don’t get me wrong, the virtual drive creating and mounting in StarBurn works very well, but WinCDEmu promises to be a lot easier to use and most important, a lot faster.
After installing the program it will install the Windows drivers that it needs in order to work. After that step is completed it will all go downhill… Just double-click an image file and it will be mounted in just a few seconds! I used for this purpose a backup of a movie DVD.

Let’s verify if it’s mounted… And it is, drive J.

To unmount the image you can click eject from the drive context menu or you can double click the respective image file again. And it unmounts in a few seconds.

The program supports ISO, CUE, BIN, IMG and RAW image file formats and it simply just works. You can’t customize anything about it, just install and use it. Another important thing is that you can simultaneously mount virtually an infinity of disc images, there is no limit, each mounted image will have its own virtual device.

InfraRecorder is an open source CD/DVD burner, able to burn your files to physical discs as well as disc image files. It can also record to dual layer DVDs.


Review
My favorite freeware DVD burning program is StarBurn, although its interface could use a little bit more functionality. And although I’m quite happy with StarBurn I decided to test InfraRecorder, mainly because it’s an open source program and I have a weak spot for open source software, you know that
InfraRecorder‘s interface is as simple as it could be, you can easily see what the program can do for you.

After you select what you want to burn or copy you’ll be taken to the main interface, where you can browse through your computer to find the files that you want to burn. I like the way it integrates the explorer-like navigation, it’s a big plus if you have many DVDs to burn one after the other.

I have many DVD Video discs to burn, and I wanted to know how InfraRecorder handles this particular type. As far as I can tell it can burn a DVD Video disc only if you give it the VOB files already made and authored.

Overall if I compare InfraRecorder‘s features with StarBurn it’s pretty obvious that StarBurn is more complex, but for easy dat to day DVD burning tasks InfraRecorder is a good solution.

UnderCover XP is a small freeware program that can help you to print CD or DCD covers easily. Also features support for CD or DVD label printing.


Review
UnderCover XP was suggested to me by one of the many Dutch readers of this blog, Marco. Although I don’t print CD or DVD covers on a daily basis I do need a program to help me with that at least once a month, so I was delighted to give UnderCover XP a try. First of all it’s a very small freeware program, the setup package is less than 1 MB! I chose the poster of one of my favorite classic movies for this test, “For Whom The Bell Tolls”, with Gary Cooper and Ingrid Bergman.

You have a lot of templates to choose from and the program will automatically scale your image to make it become suitable for front covers, back covers, inlays, DVD Boxes. You can even have CD labels built and printed but unfortunately you can’t choose which region of the original image to use, the program simply scales down the entire thing and punches a hole right through the middle.

A good thing is that you can add more templates through the graphical format editor, so you can build your own templates and have them saved for future use.

A good freeware program overall which offers good functionality for free. The lastest version was released early this month, so it seems that support is still there.

I downloaded CrystalDiskMark 2.2 because I was using another software from the same author, CrystalDiskInfo , and I was and still am quite happy with it. The main reason for using CrystalDiskMark is that I wanted to find out which is the fastest from the four hard disks that I have in my system.
The program is quite simple, just select the hard disk and run the tests. There are three types of tests: sequential read/write, random read/write with 512 kb files and random read/write with 4 kb files.

Testing a hard disk will only take a few minutes. I found out which is the fastest hard disk in my system, so I’ll use that one for the Windows XP “virtual memory”.

I saw more and more free CD burning applications developing very well lately, and that’s very good news. I reviewed some time ago CD Burner XP, a good piece of CD burning freeware, but now I think I found something better. A lot better. Star Burn 10 is a very promising free program, which you can use to burn your files on CD, DVD, Blu-Ray and HD-DVD. And there are even more interesting features. Let’s take a look.

The installer is about 9 MB, I downloaded it in about 30 seconds. The installation process doesn’t take long, it completed in about a single minute. The interface looks nice and tidy, with nicely designed buttons.

When you pick a task to run a wizard pops up to guide you through the steps you need to take.

Regarding the main feature of the program, which is burning your files to CD or DVD, nothing special to say, it burns your stuff nice and easy, no problems there. The only minor flaw that I found is that the program doesn’t check the disc after burning, but hey, you can do that yourself.
The good thing about Star Burn 10 is that you can do more than just burning CDs: you can rip audio CDs, and then compress the output .waw files to .wma, .ogg or .mp3. And there’s even more: you can create .iso disc images and then mount disc images to a virtual drive you can create with Star Burn 10!

This is one of the most promising freeware programs I’ve seen lately. I’m pretty sure I won’t renew my Nero license
